  • Flat Earth

    Photography by Lina Mendoza.

Vintage Mink, Vintage Fox, Satin, Wire Armature.

Documented at the Dress Poetics exhibition at Nymphenburg Palace in Munich, Germany. Curated by Hannah Schmutterer.

In today’s culture shaped by the two-dimensional screen, what we see is nothing shy of an illusion. It is a denial of reality, a great escape, blocking our connection under the guise of being connected. Mother Earth, with her regenerative charge and bounty, has become a stranger. Through the glossy two-dimensional interface, the depth of our experience is condensed. Life and human connection are reduced to the superficial. The present moment is interrupted.

Metaphorically it is a luxurious dress, painstakingly made of the finest Earthly goods, but it cannot be occupied. It leaves the body vulnerable and exposed. The hem is sewn shut, as well as the collar and sleeves. Look, but do not touch. Want, but you cannot have. It is a black and white issue, wrapped in a pink satin bow. With no room to breathe, this is my current plea for reality. There are far too many limitations to living two-dimensionally.
